History Summary

1966 Through the leading of the Holy Spirit, Rev Edward Jones saw that there was a great need to let God’s light shine in this community.  He and Sister Mary Jones went throughout the community inviting all those without a church home to join them in building a place of worship.

The New Light Baptist Community Church held its first service on Sunday December 7, 1966 under the leadership of the Pastor and Founders Rev. Edward Jones and Sister Mary Jones at 6 Seventh Street, Matawan, New Jersey.

1967 The New Light Baptist Community Church moved to its current location of 233 Center Street, Cliffwood Beach NJ  in December.

1969 New Light Baptist Community Church was incorporated by the State of New Jersey in February 1969.  On April 13th, New Light Baptist Community Church received official recognition from the Seacoast Baptist Missionary Association.  On Sunday, November 23rd, Rev. Edward Jones was ordained under the direction of Rev. Caleb Oates, Moderator of the Seacoast Baptist Missionary Association.

1970 – 1979 – On Sunday, December 9th, Sister Mary Jones was ordained by the Seacoast Association and she became the Assistant Pastor of New Light.

1980 – 1989 – New Light Baptist Church Purchased property which included a Parsonage and finalized the plans to expand its current edifice.

1990 In January, Rev. Mary Jones officially became the Co-Pastor of New Light.

1991 –  Rev. Edward Jones received and Honorary Degree of Divinity and Rev. Mary Jones received an Honorary Degree of Humanity From the Tennessee School of Religion.  We were also blessed with an addition to our Ministerial Staff, Associate Minister Joseph Pickett.  In addition we celebrated the Church’s 25th Anniversary in November.

1992Brother Clyde Mack and Sister Mary Mack were ordained to the Office of Deacon.

1994 Sunday, February 4th, Sister Edna Wiley delivered her trial sermon to the Church.  As a result of receiving her license to preach, Minister Edna Wiley was added to the Ministerial Staff to serve in the capacity of reaching out into the community; offering various specialized programs.

1997  Tuesday, September 23rd marks the date of the passing of our beloved Co-Pastor, Rev. Dr. Mary L. Jones.  Saturday November 15th marks the date of the passing of our Pastor and Founder of New Light, Rev. Dr. Edward Jones.

Due to the death of our Co-Pastor Mary Jones and Pastor Edward Jones, Deacon Michael Wells Chairman of the Deacon Board became the spiritual head of New Light and held this position until the selection of a new pastor was made.

1998 On Sunday, July 5th Minister Edna Wiley was ordained and licensed to the Office of Minister of the Gospel under the direction of Rev. Betsy Adams, President of the Spiritual Life Clergy Women.

1999 On Sunday, September 5th, New Light received our new Pastor, John H. Armstrong, his wife, Victoria and his family with love.

2000 On Friday, October 27th, the Seacoast Baptist Missionary Association, under the direction of the Moderator, Rev. Harris ordained Rev. John H. Armstrong as Pastor-Elect.

2001 On Sunday, January 14th, Bishop Eddie Bennett of Hallelujah Christian Fellowship installed Pastor-Elect John H. Armstrong as the Pastor of New Light Baptist Community Church.

2002 On Sunday, November 10th, Sister Brenda Brown was installed to the office of Evangelist.

2006 On Sunday, March 26th Sister Lystrea Cooks delivered her trial sermon to the Church.  As a result of receiving her license to preach from Pastor John H. Armstrong, Minister Crooks was added to the Ministerial Staff.

2007  On Saturday, July 21st, Brother Joshuwa Armstrong delivered his trial sermon to the Church.  As a result of receiving his license to preach from Pastor John H. Armstrong, Minister Armstrong was added to the Ministerial Staff.

2009On Saturday, November 21st, Brother Frederick C. Davis delivered his trial sermon to the church.  As a result of receiving his license to preach from Pastor John H. Armstrong, Evangelist Davis was added to the Ministerial Staff.

2010On Saturday, May 8th marked the passing of our beloved First Lady, Evangelist Victoria Armstrong.

2012On Friday, September 14th the members of New Light rejoiced in the marriage union of our Pastor John H. Armstrong and Sister Gwendolyn (Freeman) Armstrong.

 2013 – On Sunday, June 2nd marked the passing of our beloved Deacon Grady Knight who will be most missed for his commitment and dedication in doing the work of the Lord.

 2014 – On Wednesday, October 1st marked the passing of our beloved Deacon Clyde Mack who will be most missed for his commitment and service to the Lord.
